    We continually improve our operations aiming at the socio-environmental balance throughout the value chain
 

Investing in alternatives that guarantee greater efficiency in the water and energy consumption and less generation of residues and effluents in our processes is a concern of our company. We believe companies that anticipate themselves to lower supply of natural resources and care about reducing the impacts of their activities increase their opportunities to reduce costs, mitigate risk, gain competitiveness and ensure the sustainability of their business.

In this sense, improving our efficiency in environmental aspects and reducing the pressure we have on the availability of supplies and the quality of the environment are the premises of our business.

Therefore, in our forestry and industrial operations, we have adopted the best environmental management practices, always seeking to improve our eco-efficiency. The process is part of SGA, our Environmental Management System that is ISO 14001 certified and periodically monitors our performance through five environmental indicators: Water, Effluents, Emissions, Energy and Residues.

WATER AND EFFLUENTS

Among other initiatives for water eco-efficiency, we collected rainwater for irrigation from our seedling nursery, located in the Lençóis Paulista (SP) unit, and adopted reuse systems and mechanisms in our industrial processes, such as in electroplating and wood fiber sheet production.

In addition, we constantly invest in improving the efficiency of our treatment plants, so that most of the effluents generated by our activities can be reused in our own production processes.

ENERGY

Betting on the energy efficiency of our processes and equipment is one of the main initiatives that we maintain to guarantee the reduction of the electricity consumption in our units. In addition, we invest in the use of renewable fuels in our energy matrix. Among our main projects is the substitution of oil-derived BPF for biomass of wood dust for thermal energy generation in our production process of MDP panels.

RESIDUES

We also invest in initiatives that enable the reuse of residues in our own production processes or as an input to industries in other segments.

In the Deca Division, Metals units apply pioneering technology that recovers and reuses all remaining bronze and brass from the casting process in other productive stages. The Bathroom fittings units, in turn, are equipped with crusher, equipment that crushes bathroom fittings under our quality criteria to reuse them in the composition of the mass used in the manufacture of new parts and resell their plaster casts to the cement industry in order to be reused in the manufacture of cement.

In the Madeira Division, we maintain composting plants that process the sludge generated in the treatment of effluents and the ashes from biomass burning for thermal energy generation. The process results in organic compost used to fertilize the soil from our own forest areas.

OUR FUTURE VISION

Promoting environmental conservation has been part of our company's culture since its foundation, emanating from the vision of our own shareholders for the business. We are aware that the lack of natural resources and the social impacts of industrial operations are significant risks to the sustainability of our business. Increased costs for energy generation and low water availability during drought periods, for example, are aspects that increase risks and require innovations and continuous improvements.

Our commitments to the Eco-efficiency theme up to 2025 are:

  • Reduce the relative water consumption by 10%
  • Reduce the relative destination of residues to landfill by 20%
  • Have 95% of the matrix for the generation of thermal energy originating from renewable sources in Panels (until 2018)
  • Reduce relative energy consumption in Deca and Hydra by 20%
  • Consider socio-environmental criteria in 100% of the development of new projects
  • Perform Life Cycle Analysis of the products with the highest volume of each business
  • Implement socio-environmental program in up to two years in acquired companies
